DAH 306: History of Illustration: Databases

Course guide for the History of Illustration class

Top Database Recommendations

Academic articles often will not appear on websites searched by Google because they are stored in subscription-only databases that provide limited access. However, CCS subscribes to a number of databases that are useful to Illustration students.

Tips on Searching Databases

Databases work differently than Google. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Use the terms AND, OR, NOT to combine different words:
                Illustration AND Portraiture
                Illustration OR Drawing
  • To search for a phrase, use parentheses around words:
                (American illustration)
                (Feminist illustrator)
  • Use an asterisk to search for different endings of a root word:
                Illustrat*
                     Searches: Illustration, Illustrator,
                     Illustrating, Illustrate
  • Be creative
If you have trouble finding articles on your topic, try different keywords
